Hey everyone,
So... it's been a while. Like, a really long while since we've put out an episode of Reality 2.0. We know some of you are probably wondering if we disappeared into the digital void, or maybe got distracted by some shiny new AI tool and forgot we had a podcast. The truth is, we've just been incredibly busy, but that's not really an excuse for leaving you hanging.
We genuinely missed talking with you all about the stuff that gets us excited (and sometimes keeps us up at night) in the tech world. There's always so much happening, and honestly, we've been itching to get back behind the mics and dig into it all.
Episode 158: Our Humble Return
We're calling this comeback episode "Reality 2025: Bridging AI, Security, and Open Source Challenges," though we spent the first few minutes debating whether we should just rebrand the whole thing as Reality 3.0 or Reality 2025. (Spoiler alert: we're sticking with Reality 2.0 for now, but we reserve the right to change our minds if the tech world gets any weirder.)
In this episode, we covered a lot of ground. Maybe too much ground for people who've been out of practice. We talked about:
AI security concerns and why they're keeping us up at night, how cloud-native technologies keep evolving faster than we can keep up, the increasingly complex world of AI projects within Linux Foundation groups (Katherine's been at the Open Source Summit in Denver, so she had insights to share), Apple's interesting approach to personal AI and what that might mean for the rest of us, and the thorny challenges around AI and data privacy that nobody seems to have figured out yet.
The Stuff That Really Got Us Excited
We spent a good chunk of time talking about personal AI models and their potential both the exciting possibilities and the very real concerns. It's one of those topics where we feel like we're just scratching the surface, but it's fascinating to think about how these technologies might actually help us in our daily lives without completely compromising our privacy.
We also dove into a project called "My Terms" that's trying to flip the whole cookie consent model on its head. It's the kind of innovation that makes us optimistic about technology actually serving people better, rather than just making things more complicated.
Our Promise (This Time We Mean It)
Look, we know we've been inconsistent. We know you've probably unsubscribed from our feeds or forgotten we exist. But we're genuinely committed to getting back to regular episodes. There's too much happening in AI, security, and open source to stay quiet, and we miss the conversations—both the ones we have with each other and the ones we hopefully spark with you.
We're not going to make grand promises about weekly releases or anything like that, because we've learned our lesson about overpromising. But we are going to try to be more consistent, and we're going to keep focusing on the constructive conversations that (we hope) help us all stay optimistic about where technology is heading.
Thanks for Sticking Around
If you're reading this, it probably means you haven't given up on us completely, and that means a lot. We know there are plenty of other tech podcasts out there, and we don't take your attention for granted. We're just two people trying to make sense of a rapidly changing world, and we're grateful you're willing to come along for the ride.
The tech landscape has changed quite a bit since our last episode, and we're excited to explore it with you. From AI governance challenges to privacy innovations to the endless complexity of securing our digital lives, there's no shortage of things to discuss.
Thanks for your patience, and we hope Episode 158 feels like catching up with old friends who never lost their enthusiasm for the subject matter.
Here's to more regular conversations in 2025,
Doc and Katherine
Reality 2.0: Episode 158 is available now wherever you get your podcasts. We promise we're back for real this time.
I will never forgive you. Just kidding! I am very much looking forward to the new episodes.
